Walk with confidence

Our technology considers streetlights, seclusion and crime to plan your route after dark.

The routing engine

Built for people, not vehicles.

The lantern algorithm analyses signals on each street to build a route you’ll want to walk

Streetlighting

Time-aware lighting data that favours lit routes over dark alleys and switched-off streetlights.

Recent crime

Weighted from recent police-reported data nearby.

Seclusion

How exposed or hidden a path feels versus busier streets.

Tunnels & underpasses

Flagged and routed around wherever there’s a better way.

24/7 spaces

Keeps you near somewhere open: a shop, a station, a hospital.

The difference

What to expect on your trip

lantern compares your usual way against the brighter one and gives you the facts to make an informed decision

Get your route. Know what to expect. Walk with lantern.

We’re on a mission to reduce the mental load of navigating public spaces for women and girls. Weighing up taxi fares against the personal safety cost of walking after dark just feels rubbish. Other maps we tried optimise for the fastest way, not the one that feels safer to walk at night. We created a routing engine that does. While lantern can’t make it safer out there, we can arm you with the data to make an informed choice about your journey.
